Ok ladies- here is my version of ratatouille tonight- I made the sauce from the plum tomatoes - used the recipe in one of the older newsletters and pureed with a touch of water... spread that in the platter and layered in the vegetables. I used the tomatoes instead of red bells - I really think they will add more flavor and the color is fabulous! I fanned them out more for effect and plus I was a little lazy.

So - for lunch tomorrow the office will enjoy this and some figs with prosciutto. Yummy!

And after I put Ava to bed I am going to make Italian wedding soup with ground beef from Tina. Instead of carrots I am going to use the beets and instead of the spinach I will use the beet greens. This is an experiment but I am sure it will be delicious.

I was sick for two days and was lamenting my vegetables in the fridge without me but alas, they have survived!

I have copied my mom who lives in CT on this since it is she who has passed on this love for cooking and growing things to me.

With more gratitude and appreciation than I can express,

Cheri

PS - Ava (two years old) loves to see the turkeys when we pick up the vegetables at the school.

Hi Tina,

Thank you so much for sharing your memories. I was also lucky enough to have a grandmother that ate from the dirt. It was different for me because we grew up in Oakland and she was 2+ hours away in the central valley, Dos Palos. Of course with us being city kids some of the things that went on there strange to the four of us. As an adult I have a great appreciation for what Mable taught me. It is because of her that I am such a strong supporter of local organic growers.
I certainly understand your feelings about store bought chickens. I remember my grandfather chasing a chicken around the yard and, through a process I'd never experienced before, that bird ended up on the table for dinner. Once they slaughtered two gianormous hogs. It took all day.
My father worked on the waterfront in San Francisco and one day came home with a calf. The natural thing to do was pack up the car and head down to Grandmother's house. We put it in the back of our station wagon and set off. The three "back seat" children had to endure being licked with that huge tongue all the way down the road. For us kids it was the most exciting trip ever!
It is nice to hear that your mother and daughter are so close. That generational connection is so very important. My children had the opportunity to spend time at her house and experience history firsthand. I also remember the dinners at my grandmother's with a table full of so many different foods. What I loved most was listening to my grandmother tell stories after we'd eaten. At times it would be hours between the time dinner was served and the dishes made it to the sink. I was
absolutely fascinated by the world she'd grown up in and could listen to those stories over and over. I lost my grandmother a while back. She was 99 years old.
I want you to know that I miss you at the Farmer's Market. Someone told me you were down at Whole Foods. I'll try to make it down there one day. It's a bit out of my neighborhood but I'd make a special trip to see you. Besides, nobody has potatoes like you.
Well Tina I suppose I've babbled on long enough. You take care and I hope to see you soon.

Gwen
